Anyone who has ever taken a course in social science has discovered that common sense beliefs are not always validated by scientific research. In some cases, common sense beliefs are just plain wrong. This is not true.

Consider this when making big career choices.

For years, businesses have operated under the assumption that money was the primary motivation for employees to remain with an employer, dedicate themselves to the company’s success and strive to produce exemplary work. Managers have dangled merit increases, bonuses and other financial incentives in front of their employees in the belief that the pursuit of money would result in greater productivity, reduced turnover, improved product quality, better customer service and even lower rates of absenteeism. If money is such a great motivator, why are so many companies still plagued by low productivity, high turnover, plummeting quality, disappointing customer service and high absenteeism despite the monetary carrots they have dangled before their employees? The answer is simple: money is not the best motivator for most employees. Naturally, employees are individuals who are motivated by different things. Even the same employee can have motivations that change over time. However, for more than 70 years, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and its revised models have been used to demonstrate what motivates people. The concept is typically illustrated as a pyramid with five to eight tiers.

Because he had no choice. He has four children to feed. Getting out of your comfort zone and into a place where you have no choice but to succeed is the quickest kick in the ass you will ever. Our e-mailer cut back his work hours and the money he was earning to learn something new that will make him more money.

That feeling is an accomplishment and wanting to feel that again, every day, becomes a source of motivation. Look at the food, appreciate how pretty the motivaton you made looks. Smell your food. Notice the aromas of the different spices that you used in your chili. Take a bite and put your fork. Chew each howw thoroughly. Taste your food, notice the textures in your mouth. Being mindful when we eat can not only help us eat less, it can help us take more pleasure from our food.

We can use a similar tactic when it comes to money. One really effective way to do this is to break down everything you want to buy into how many hours you would have to work moneu buy it. That is 35 hours of your time, almost a full work week. But if you apply this tactic to the majority of your purchases, you may find yourself putting a lot of things back on the shelf.

Another tactic is to adopt a spending mantra. Dod important than getting out of credit card debt, more important than investing so you can retire earlymore important than saving for a college fund.

Sometimes the answer will be yes, but not. Another way to employ money mindfulness is to practice gratitude. For some of us, money is like our spouse. Motiavtion way to stay motivated is with visual cues. Make a vision board. You can cut pictures of things you want out of a magazine or write things you want to do on a sticky note. You can stick these things on your fridge or on a poster board hung where you will see it every day.

Seeing is believing when it comes to your numbers. This can be motivating in two mmuch. Seeing that you are coming up short every month can motivate you to cut back on spending or to start looking for a better paying job. Seeing positive progress in those numbers is motivating.

You want to be very specific when you are listing your goals. Use numbers and dates to hold yourself accountable. You need to cut down spending or make more money with a new job or side hustle. Set a ,uch so you give yourself a deadline. Tell someone moneg to you about this, someone who has a vested interest in you doing.

This is additional motivation because this person can hold you accountable when you start to slip up and they are counting on you.

Most people’s motivation to work is not driven solely by how much money they make. On the other hand, raises do often motivate employees; however, the way raises are issued often impacts their ability to motivate employees. Raises can be an effective motivator for employees; however, employees must recognize that raises represent a reward for excellent work. There must be a direct connection between superior performance and higher pay. Employees must also have sufficient autonomy over their work so that their efforts can make a significant impact on their performance. The size of the raise may also have an impact. Awarding hourly employees a few more cents per hour is unlikely to generate significant motivation for increased effort. The effectiveness of raises and bonuses to motivate employee performance is often short-lived, according to «Entrepreneur» magazine. After a few short months, the positive impact of a raise can fade, which also reduces the effect a raise has on employee motivation.
