In the dear old days of our youths — a decade or so ago — the concept of rebooting a superhero movie franchise was a pretty foreign one. Sure, Batman and Superman had already seen a few actors and directors come and go, but caped characters getting multiple reinventions on the big screen still seemed like the realm of desperation. These days, Disney and Amke Studios continue to enjoy their lofty privilege in not being subject to the age-old rules of film marketing. As such, we are going to get and, in an unprecedented twist, possibly clamor to see yet another reboot of the Fantastic Four. Fans of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm may approach this with their own wary and even cynical eye, but we are nonetheless certain that hope springs eternal from the breast of a long-suffering fandom — one that has for decades been denied a truly great film centered on what is essentially the Royal Family of Comics. Let’s take a look at what we might be able to expect from the Fantastic Four’s eventual introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that the studio was indeed planning a Fantastic Four film, and that it was in maake phase of pre-production. A schedule released by the Walt Disney Company in May of revealed dates penciled in for three then-untitled Marvel films: one in February, one in July, and the May 6th release kake was revealed at D23 to be Black Panther 2.
The fictional superhero team Fantastic Four featured in Marvel Comics publication has appeared in four live-action films since its inception. The plots deal with four main characters, known formally as Reed Richards , Susan Storm , Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm , and how they adapt to the superpowers they attain. Constantin Film bought the film rights for the characters in In , after Constantin sub-licensed the film rights to 20th Century Fox , a second Fantastic Four film entered production. Due to 20th Century Fox’s disappointment with the box-office return of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer , a potential third Fantastic Four film and a Silver Surfer spin-off film were canceled. In , the development for a reboot was announced. Directed by Josh Trank , Fantastic Four was released on August 7, and received negative reviews from both critics and public, and Trank himself. A sequel to the reboot was scheduled to be released on June 9, , but it was removed from Fox’s upcoming slate. The story of the film focused on four astronauts that were bombarded with cosmic rays from a comet while on an experimental space craft. In the process, they acquired extraordinary abilities. In , the adaptation, titled The Fantastic Four , had its trailer released to theaters, and its cast and director went on a promotional tour; however the film was not officially released.
Perhaps Marvel was inspired by the move in when it cancelled the original comic book series just as rival film studio 20th Century Fox was set to release its doomed Fantastic Four reboot on the big screen. But Marvel was getting nowhere in its negotiations to try to bring the titles back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As retaliation against Fox, it allegedly decided to write Reed Richards and his team out of the picture in print. Fast forward to the picture looks very different. Given how much fun writers are having in the cosmic corners of the Marvel universe with episodes such as Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, it would make sense to reimagine Reed and his team as the connection between mankind and alien races such as the Kree and the Skrull, just as they have been in the comics for decades. That arc saw the Earth become a battleground for the two alien races, with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers charged with defending mankind from the extraterrestrial threat. At least by the time Reed et al do come home, it looks as if they will also have regained their place in the comics. Last week, Marvel confirmed that the Fantastic Four are going back into print with a new ongoing series being published from August. Facebook Twitter Pinterest. Topics Film Week in geek. What will be the release date for the Fantastic Four reboot?
It is tempting to wonder if there has ever been a superhero team more mishandled on the big screen than the Fantastic Four. Yet somehow all of the above are thriving in multiplexes, while Reed Richards and co are an enduring Hollywood disappointment. In fact, the history of the franchise points to one knee-jerk decision after another, a pattern that shows no sign of letting up if rumours that the latest reboot are to be believed. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with identifying a market for comic book stories aimed at the very young.
Disney’s purchase of Fox has made a new Fantastic Four possible
There were dramas, musicals, romantic-comedies, war pictures, Westerns, even the occasional foreign-language import. That time is no more, and no one in Hollywood is getting poor funding superhero entries, particularly this weekend. Trank, of course, is the credited director of Fantastic Four — not the versions from and that featured a pre-Captain America Chris Evans as a wise-cracking frat boy version of the Human Torch. Nor did he helm the notorious cheapie version produced by Roger Corman that, for complicated reasons, was never intended for release. The production was plagued with bad press, and Trank — who had previously made the resourceful indie sci-fi hit Chronicle — had endless battles with the studio, which he did not win. The result was a pretty much objectively misshapen mess, featuring ugly, unfinished-looking CGI and oddly lethargic turns from otherwise reliable stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell. It also has perhaps the worst-ever example of the titular line. The Fantastic Four quickly escaped the public consciousness, and its talented cast emerged unscathed. There was no seismic reckoning, no think pieces asking if the comic book movie was dying. One gigantic bomb in nine years is nothing to sneeze at. Green Lantern , from the following year, merely underperformed, and it wound up freeing up star Ryan Reynolds to mock the genre with Deadpool.
