You see, in maks world there are two kinds of people, my friend: those with boring jobs, and those who dig. You dig. The main reason why you became a photographer is because you love it. You enjoy every single day at work, polishing your skills and learning about human nature, while your distant cousin homo officinus spends their days filling in Excel sheets. They want you to pay the bills that have been sleeping in your mailbox for the past couple of months. This is where the million dollar question comes in: how do you transform your passion into a profitable profession?
Look for a niche
I get many viewer questions, but this is one of the most asked. What if the model wants the photographer to pay for the shoot? Before anyone raises concern, this is a photo shoot to build the model’s portfolio, not for an ad campaign. When did negotiating becoming such a one-sided situation for photographers? No, we ought to get paid for our work. The photographer who asked the question mentioned that the model is from Instagram. That the knowledge and time vested in to learning our craft, is nothing more than to appease the models. At this point in the game, I would go into my rant about equipment and how much it costs, and here’s where models say the one thing that I love hearing, but makes me cringe every time I hear it; Models have expenses too you know! We have to buy clothes, gym memberships, pedicures and everything else to make ourselves look good for the shoots.

Something tells me that this is going to be a popular blog post…. Which is difficult, because I also struggle with the financial sides of things. Here goes:. Each and every single product displayed on a site needs to be photographed, and it needs to be photographed well. This can be a long day, if not many long days, but it also pays very well. Sometimes, it involves nothing but a mannequin as well, which then gets cut out in post production. These create more of a story, an aspiration, a way that clients can look at the clothes and picture them in context. These shoots are definitely lots of fun, and can pay as well. Generally, you will only shoot the key pieces of collections, rather than the entire collection, as you would with e-comm. One of the main ways that I earn a living as a fashion photographer is through content creation.

The advantage of diversification is also protection because if one income stream dries up you have others to fall back on. This all said, over time you will gravitate towards one particular type of work, and specialize in it. A signature style will make you stand out from the crowd.

Successful stock photographer Cathy Yeulet shares the secrets to making money in the industry. Monkey Business Cathy Yeulet makes a living travelling the world and taking photos — but she’s not an Instagram star.

Photography businesses are some of the worst businesses out there to start if your primary goal is to make money. Not only that, but the demand for professional photography is going down every day as people carry phone cameras with them everywhere they go, giving them the ability to capture images in moments. Plus, with more and more people becoming professional photographers, the market is just filled with people trying to start a photography business. Yes, you need high quality work that sets you apart. Just a few off the top of photogtaphers head? Or you can outsource it. It took me just shy of 3 monsy to get to the point where we completely replaced our household income with our photography income, and that was considered fast. Mldels, I believe that as more people take up professional photography as a part-time business, the harder it is going to be to do it full-time. So why should I even bother writing this blog anymore if things are just getting harder? I look at my friend Kim, who has been in the photography business for over 20 years full-time and is still rocking it despite all the changes, and I know that for those who are willing to do what it takes, you can do it.
