Anybody collecting the tops and taking or sending them to the charity by car has spent far more on petrol than the tops are worth; the charity would be much better off if you just gave them the money, say 25p per monry, that you were going to spend taking them there, and just throw charitties tops away.

Meaning the cost to you for transportation is zero. How far are they willing to travel to do this and for what quantity?
As has been discussed in the other thread on this topic such collections are evidently pretty unprofitable for the amount of effort required to accumulate the amounts needed to even raise some charitiew change out of it….
There have to be many other ways to make more money for charity than. However it is a good way to get started. It costs nothing to collect something you would otherwise throw away. People who are very negative are often negative about absolutely. They should stop being so negative and do something positive.
I suspect they argue themselves out of hod anything at all. They should remember: Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. Southampton has a big university and there must be students travelling there from all over the country and many of them will have cars or parents and friends with cars who visit.
What better way of getting your plastic milk obttle tops to Southampton and creating some community spirit at the same time. So you would prefer to get people to just hand over their money? You could argue the same point with larger amounts of money. After all it is not worth it if it is going to all disappear in administration costs. We are in it for the money for our organisations plus donations in kind. The bottom line is what gives the best return hops the organisation.

I read the Ruth Morrison thread a long time ago and thought when more recently I saw that Rose Road were no longer collecting milk bottle tops that that was the end of it.

No they may not be yours but that is not to say that they are not worth knowing. There is nothing to stop people giving more money.
Once they know something about a charity they are more likely to. I am constantly being chugged in the high street. This may suit charities as it may make it easier for them cash-flow wise and of course people often forget that they have direct debits and if they are well off enough it is a very successful method of bringing in funds. However it does not suit everyone and the very fact that it is called chugging says a lot about the practice. Time is a very valuable commodity but people will give this more freely if they are having fun and the same goes for money.
