Virginia was the first successful southern colony. While Puritan zeal was fueling New England’s mercantile development, and Penn’s Quaker experiment wats turning the middle colonies into America’s bread basket, the South was turning to cash crops. Geography and motive rendered the development of these colonies distinct from those that lay to the North. Immediately to Virginia’s north was Maryland. Begun as a Catholic experiment, the colony’s economy would soon come to mirror that of Virginia, as tobacco became the most important crop. To the south lay the Carolinas, created after the English Civil War had been concluded.

The Southern Colonies. They had hot, humid summers and mild winters, perfect for a year round growing season. They had a plethera of crops, leading to cash crops. Farming was the best source of food for the Southern Colonies. It was the main source of blue dye, and was discovered by Eliza Lucas. There was only 1 large city, because of large farms called plantations that were owned by very wealthy families. Normally, these plantations were self sufficient, and almost ran like a small town themselves. Since the land was in such large amounts, there needed to be more than a simple family to run it, so the colonies looked to African Americans.

This video gives an introduction to the Southern Colonies. Virginia was the first permanent English colony of the Southern Colonies. They were very successful due to a warm climate, rich soil, and long growing season. These conditions promoted an agricultural based economy in the South. They grew rice, indigo, and tobacco. Most of the labor was supplied through indentured servants and African Slaves. The first African Slaves were brought into Virginia in These were all colonies claimed by England, later called Great Britain. They claimed these colonies whenever they were first trying to race to put colonies in North America, so they could have more colonial power than any of the other European powers, such as Spain or France. These five colonies developed on their own and were able to become very powerful, very well-functioning colonies on their own. Since they grew, they kind of stuck around, where some of the other colonies fizzled out. Virginia was the first permanent settlement, or the first permanent English colony. Georgia was the last.

The Southern Colonies were located below the Mason Dixon line , which is an imaginary line that acted as the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland. All of the colonies south of the Mason-Dixon were considered ‘slave owning’ colonies, while most of the colonies north of the Mason-Dixon were not. They planned to do this by planting and selling cash crops like rice, tobacco, and indigo. They also traveled to the southern colonies to avoid religious persecution. Msking soil near the coast lands was rich. In the more southern states, the coast land was swampy. The revers were large and slow moving, which provided good east to west trade. Also, the Mississippi river provided north to south trade, as well as a water source for irrigation.
