The agreement, which amounts to a set of anti-robocall principles , is aimed at combating and preventing the phone-ringing annoyance. Included in the deal is call-blocking technology that will be integrated into a dozen phone networks’ existing infrastructure, at no additional charge to customers. The tech giants will also provide other call blocking and call labeling for those customers who want more screening tools. Ignoring a robocall doesn’t keep some scammers from making money from caller-ID services

Robocalls are a leading tool of financial scammers and a great risk in particular to older Americans, MacDonald said. According to the agreement, the companies will offer call-blocking tools for free to customers, with the exception of those who still use old copper landline phones where it’s more difficult from a technical standpoint. Many of the major companies already offer this, although some charge for some or all of the services. The agreement also asks the carriers to deploy a system that can label caller ID numbers as real.
