As a single parent, I’m always looking for ways to save money. I’ve always loved thrift stores, and have found some great clothing, DVDs, books, collectibles, and pieces of furniture at my local shops. But moneu got really interesting six months ago when I came across an item that I didn’t really want, but knew was valuable. It was a Coogi sweater; the kind worn by Bill Cosby in the 80s. I bought it, sold it on eBay, and since then I have turned my thrift store runs into a way of not just saving money — but making money. It’s not a new concept.
While it looks similar to Instagram , Poshmark allows you to sell clothing just like you would on eBay. Although many of Poshmark’s , sellers use the app as a way to clean out their closets, Marquez had always been interested in running her own business. She began searching thrift stores for gently used items from department store brands and buying them to resell on the app. Initially, she didn’t know which brands and styles would sell on the app, and which wouldn’t, so s he spent time studying what was popular. Then, she’d go out and buy those items. After a year and half, she became a suggested user on the app, meaning that all new users were invited to follow her. Now, she devotes three or four days of her week to shopping, with the goal of posting several new items every day. Local boutiques in Bentonville, Arkansas, where she lives, often sell their overstock to her at a discount.
Go often! We end up at Goodwill at least a week most weeks. Some days we walk out with a cart full of awesome finds, and other days we leave with nothing. Be smart about which stores you shop at. Most thrift stores will have carts of random stuff around the store. These are items that have been priced but not yet put out on the floor.
