money-in-the-closet’s tracks
In the last month I shared with you about how to clean out your closet and how to decide what to keep! There are all kinds of forums available through the internet to sell the clothing you are done with. While there are tons to choose from, one that is relatively user friendly is called Poshmark. You can download the app to your smartphone and put your items for sale right from there. The app gives you lots of ideas about how to make the most of your postings with tips for taking good pictures, adding your listing to groups or parties, and making suggestions for you daily. They take a small fee out of the price you sell your item for and provide you with a shipping label that covers the shipping. Then you just have to package the item, attach the label, and pop it in the mail! You can also send clothing into ThredUp to earn money towards your next purchases. This puts you in full control of prices and local deliveries, but may require more of you personally. However, you might find someone who likes all your stuff and wants more, or maybe you can haggle your way to prices you like! You will be subject to haggling from buyers and will be at the mercy of the market and finding like-minded fashionistas. You do all of the work here but you also get to keep all of the rewards!

Only 20 percent of the clothes in the average person’s closet are worn regularly. You can turn the other 80 percent of that clutter into cash. Digital consignment shops, such as Poshmark and thredUP, offer you a simple way to sell your gently used clothing. Users of the Poshmark app currently share more than 7 million items a day, said Manish Chandra, the company’s founder and CEO. Thredup offers merchandise from 35, brands that people can buy and sell online. For a website like ThredUp, you don’t have to work as much to sell your clothes. The company plans to eliminate the bag fee for all shoppers by the end of June. ThredUP decides what it wants to pay you for each item and discards the rest. It took eight weeks to get the total for my bag,» said CNBC’s retail reporter Courtney Reagan who tested out the service as well as Poshmark. See the detailed results of her test below. You will have to work harder to move the merchandise on Poshmark, Bodge said. You have to create a listing for each item, take a picture of it and set the price.

All Rights Reserved. It has taken the last few years of running a business and constant traveling to realize just how important it is to be at least semi-organized, even some of the time. As an example? Having a makeup bag filled with chargers that I always keep in my carry-on has alleviated running around airports in a mad dash to find the right charger before my flight takes off. Yeah, I pat myself on the back for that one. Another one: Planning to do those last-minute tasks the morning before a big meeting? It was filled with impulse purchases like a bright green croc Proenza Schouler bag, or an Alexander McQueen kilt! Then, about a year ago, I had a classic Oprah aha moment. Before I was able to go out and shop for the brand-new woman I wanted to become, though, there were two considerable obstacles that stood in my way: space and money. And while building a dream wardrobe sounded lovely, I had no way to actually afford it.

A few weeks ago, I gave Hoda Kotb’s closet a much needed tune-up. We put aside more than 60 items Hoda doesn’t use anymore, and listed them on a few websites where you can make cash selling used clothing and accessories. If you’re ready to turn your closet into cash, here are 5 sites that make selling your old or unwanted items easy:. They charge only 9 percent commission on each sale, which means you pocket 91 percent of the selling price. The benefits: No cost to list your items, free returns for the buyer and free shipping for the seller. Once you sign up, they’ll send you a clean-out bag for your clothes. The benefits: The Thredup team does just about all the work: Reviewing your items, taking photos of them, listing them and shipping to the buyer. On average, you earn about 40 percent of the selling price and up to 80 percent of the selling price for designer items. Just upload some pictures of your items, write a quick description, and boom: In less than 60 seconds, your item is up for sale to millions of shoppers. I listed some of my mom’s items for sale here and was extremely successful! The benefits: Poshmark’s 20 percent fee covers shipping, payment processing, customer service and any other backend details, so all you have to focus on is selling! One item many women have trouble parting with is her wedding dress. My mother, for example, is in a beautiful marriage 46 years this Feb. I tried it on and it’s way too tight for me — so I won’t be wearing it when I get married, as much as I’d like to — so I convinced her to sell it.
Streamlining your clothing clutter really can be good for your wallet
Join the conversation! But if there’s a chance of earning a little cash for decluttering our wardrobe, wouldn’t any season seem right? Ask yourself: Which type of clutter bug are you? Are you the shopper who buys the same pair of black pants again and again? Do you shop and forget what you’ve purchased? How saying price tags can you count in your closet? Or are you the type who’s afraid of throwing anything away?
